Voting Question: Trouble Buying a Car for College: family sedan vs relatively new hatchback?

I'll be going to college in the fall of 2011 and I'm having a bit of a difficult time deciding on what to purchase. My mom currently owns a 2005 Nissan Altima 2.5S with 61k miles and the current pricing on it (between $9k and $10k) is attractive, and likely to lower another grand by next year. I've driven the car for roughly 1.5 years now and I adore the feel, handling, power, etc; my only gripe is that she's a smoker (minor; I believe it won't be so difficult to clean out). My only worry is that I don't know what I'll need in college: would this sedan (~16 cu. ft. cargo space) be enough for moving to/from college every so often? Because of that, I'm thinking of getting a hatch (Nissan Versa 1.8S or mid-level Toyota Matrix). Do I need every that space (~50-60 cu ft, seats lowered)? They can be had at a decent price ($8-13k used) with low miles (<60k miles) and have better MPG (Altima, 23/29; hatches, 26/34). I'll have money coming in for college funds, so I'm fine with their prices (I don't want to spend more than $12k ideally). Basically, my concerns boil down to this: -Do I need every that cargo room? -Would it be easier to buy from family rather than a car dealer (I've heard it's not smart to buy from family or close friends)? -I adore the performance and handling aspects of the sporty Altima. Obviously the Versa/Matrix aren't designed for that, but do they handle well and accelerate well enough? I don't want to steer a snail, no matter the perceived practically. I'm just asking for somewhat peppy handling and being able to receive-up-and-go as well as being able to pass a car without fearing an accident. Also, I like the styling of the Matrix, but am unsure of the Versa hatch. I'm a male HS senior and I don't know how well received it's looks are in my age demographic (18-25). Opinions anyone? Thanks in advance =)

Resolved Question: Selling car that won't pass DEQ emissions Test?

Can I sell my van that isn't passing DEQ Emissions testing in Oregon to somebody legally and not be responsible for repairing it? I know Dealers can't do it... Legally Its an 89 Toyota Van and I've had a lot of interest from people wanting to buy it even without passing the emissions but I don't want it to arrive back on me as my responsibility. I would have it repaired but I got it for a $100 dollars and am already into it for $750 in other repairs. Don't want it to be a money pit. My 2nd and final temp allow runs out in 2 weeks also. I bought this car from a pal a couple months ago whose husband just passed away. She was trying to receive rid of it. Thought I was helping her. I'd definitely be letting the buyer know about the recent failures on emissions.

Resolved Question: 2010 Scion Tc, or 2011 Scion xB?

I'm not much of a car modifier or anything like that. I was at the Toyota dealer in Anaheim, and I've been trying to decide whether to receive a 2010 Dark Gray TC 2.4L 4 cyl. or a 2011 xB black, same specs. The tc beats the xb by a whopping 3-hp. I like the roominess of the xB and the black of it, but the tc seems to look better to the ladies AHAH. And alot of the females prefer it. Though I prefer the xb. Can you guys toss some pros and cons of each car to help me make my decision much easier? ANYTHING that would make either car worse or better than the other will help. thanks!

Open Question: Take dealership to small claims?

I bought a used honda at the toyota dealer with a deal for them to change the timing belt. long story short it fell off a few days later severely damaging the engine and after they "fixed" it my engine is making a ticking noise. They say it is normal and that every hondas tick which is bull. I took it to a honda service middle for them to hear and they said it is not normal and for them to fix it will depend on the whether the valves need adjusting or if there is actual damage but the cost could be from 500-1500 dollars. I took this information back with me to the original dealership along with the phone numbers of the honda technicians who gave me the info. They still refuse...saying that it is normal and they have done their part. What can i do??? I want to pay to have it fixed and then sue the other dealership in tiny claims for the cost. I have documentation showing the timing belt was changed and that every the valves were replaced after they fixed it. How long do I have to make this decision before my time is up? Because I am trying to sell the car first and if i don't receive a good price i'll do the court thing. Do i have a realistic chance of winning against a huge car dealership? Will a statement from the mechanics saying there was more damage be enough or will i need it notorized...might be difficult to receive them to go to a notary.

Resolved Question: I want to buy a car, Should I go with a personal loan or to a dealer?

I went to Toyota today to finance a Sienna, but because my credit score is 660 they gave me 10.5% apr on a 21.k certified preowned. I have a 2009 VW and a Solara SLE with 144.k miles my wife drives. Would it be wise for me to trade my VW for a certified vehicle or should I try to trade in the oldie and keep the VW? My APR on the VW is 15% because at the time I had bad credit but it is not as bad anymore. Should I finance through the car dealer or should I try to obtain a personal loan? and in regards to the VW, should I refinance with another company since VW doesn't do refinancing unless I trade the car in for a new car.

Resolved Question: How much of a price difference should there be between two cars that are completely equal except for the year?

For example, I have found two used vehicles that are identical, and they are listed at the same price, but one is a 2006 and one is a 2008. I want to go back to the dealer that has the 2006 version and use the 2008 as leverage to receive them to lower the price. How much of a price difference should there be between the two vehicles? (They are both Toyota RAV4's, priced at $16,300 and $16,700. Mileage, color, trim level, features, etc. are every identical.) Thanks in advance!

Resolved Question: Where do I find parts for a Daihatsu in the United States?

Hey folks, I am considering purchasing a 1988 Daihatsu Charade as a commuter car. It has only 48k miles and is in perfect condition. My biggest concern is how difficult it is to find parts. Daihatsu dealers don't exist here and I'm not sure if Toyota (who owns part of Daihatsu) supplies parts. It's a 22yo car- so it'll need something at some point and these cars are even difficult to find in junk yards. Anyone have any experience in owning or repairing Daihatsus? Thanks!

Resolved Question: I think all four of my struts are going bad on my 2001 Toyota Corolla LE?

My vehicle is a 2001 and I have approximately 57,000 miles on it, should my struts be going bad or should they have lasted longer. On average how much does it cost to have every four replaced? Also, I believe that I need my brakes replaced, pads, rotors, and brake lines replaced as well. What would be a ballpark figure for what that might cost? I know the dealer will charge a ton to do it, but what nationally known car repair place would you recommend to do these repairs? Thank you. Karl

Voting Question: Thinking about trading in my '07 toyota highlander (87,000 mi) for an '04 toyota 4runner (48,000 mi.)?

We have had no problems with my car except the fact that it doesn't have rear air for my kid and my husband doesn't want to steer it when it's "his" turn to receive the car. We have an older 4runner that my husband drives and know how great the reliability of them are. We paid cash for my highlander and owe nothing on it...we purchased it for 16,000 dollars and have put 0ver 50,000 miles since purchasing 2 years ago. Here's the catch...dealer willing to give us 13,000 for trade...but would still owe $7,000 out the door for the 4runner. Would this be stupid to do? The 4runner has less miles, bigger engine, 4x4, power seats, and sunrrof, every of wich our current highlander does not. ...actually the 4runner use to be mine and I loved driving it WAY more than I like driving the highlander. Plus, we will be getting rid the highlander regardless when he comes home from his deployment. Like I said, the Highlander is a great car...just not really our style. We only buy toyota...because we have had problem free cars when we buy them, plus they hold theier value...unlike american cars. Also, they make most toyotas sold in america in america....so I would still be giving most of my money to american workers. You receive a better car for the better price when u buy toyota because they don't tack in every the costs they pay their union workers ...their is a reason the amercian car company had to be bailed out.

Resolved Question: Valet Parker Broke My Car. What Should I Do?

Earlier this week, I checked my car into the hotel and a valet parker took it and parked it somewhere. Today, we received a message from the hotel that our car has a broken tail light. What should I do and we are leaving the hotel in 2 days? This is a new car. PS: Does anybody know if there's a Toyota dealer close Washington DC? Thanks in advance for your help! After taking a look at the car, I realize it is not only the light, but the back bumper and back bar of the Toyota Prius that need to be fixed. The hotel acknowledged it is their fault.

Resolved Question: How much should break pads and rotors cost to replace? (Toyota Solara)?

I have a 2001 Toyota Solara which I am told requires new brake pads and rotors. I have gotten an estimate of $900 for replacements every around (factory pads, aftermarket rotors). I know the rear rotors need to be replaced since they are completely rusted over, but the dealer tells me I need to replace the front ones or they will bite into the new break pads. Is this a reasonable price and what do you think about the replacement of the front rotors? Also, I am told I need my vacuum switching valve replaced to fix an engine code (P0446, 100, 110) at $215 total. Is this a reasonable price? Thanks.

For a 2001 Dodge Stratus SE. At the Dodge Dealer. How much would each one cost. I was told it would it be over $200 for a tune up? & over $60 for a oil change. Also a question for the oil change do they top off every of your fluids. I know at Toyota they do that. Resolved Question: What's the difference between getting service at a dealer, a local mechanic, or jiffy lube?

I am due for the following services on my 2007 Toyota Prius. I have never taken my car anywhere but a dealership for service. per my maintenance guide for 75,000 miles: Replace engine oil and oil filter, Rotate tires, Replace cabin air filter Replace engine air filter inspect the following ball joints and dust covers brake lines and hoses brake linings/drums and brake pads/discs steer shaft boots steer belts engine and inverter coolant exhaust pipes and mountings radiator condenser and intercooler steering gear box steering linkage and boots. My question is how much should i expect to pay? where should i take it for the best deal? obviously i used to pay too much at a dealership but whats the big difference between a tiny mechanic store and a jiiffy lube type chain? I am not a car guy and am concerned about getting ripped off or taken at new place. From talking to a couple people I heard jiffy lube does not do tire rotations so if i go there for the oil change I would need to go somewhere else for the inspections and rotation. How difficult are these inspections and shouldn't these things just be expected to be done or do i have to specify. When I went to the dealers service centers before they just signed my book and knew what services were needed based on my mileage so I'm kinda nervous about this change but need to keep on the $$.

Resolved Question: What 2010 Toyota Corolla color is your favorite?

Hi, considering getting a corolla but I don't know what color to receive. The dealer has 4 colors in the S model that has every of the features I want, and every are the same price. The colors are: 1. Blue Streak Metallic 2. Black Sand Pearl 3. Magnetic Gray Metallic 4. Classic Silver Metallic I like the blue color when I look at it in pictures and videos, but I don't really know if that color is me... I like the other 3 colors but silver can be boring, black would be cliche for me to buy and the magnetic gray, someone at work has a camry in that color and I am never sure if i like it or not when I look at it... I think right now my main 2 choices are blue streak and Black...but then again...the gray is so diffrernt and the silver looks so comfy. Anyways thanks for the answers.

I didnt know I didnt qualify, I brought my transcripts in...they had 3 people look at them and every of them told me I qualified. Now they every of a sudden realize it 15 days later? Resolved Question: Turning the 2009 Yaris steering to in either direction R or L to the max, It sticks there and does't come back?

Normally it should, but in Yaris (few of my friends have the same issue too); it doesn't until you manually rotate it to straight position? Toyota dealer boat (UK) doesn't acknowledge this issue as a problem. Any body knows if this is normal? Thank you It is while engine running and driving. I have even tried it in the parking lot, turn the car steering to extreme right and steer, and once you let the steering go, the continues to go in circle and the steering won't receive back to original / straight line. You have to manually bring it back. I wish this clears the situation. For toyota obsession: My corolla does do the same as Yaris. I have 2008 corolla and its steering does return to neutral position. Dr. and Mrs Bears face: I know Yaris doesn't have a human brain.Does it mean my corolla (2008); BMW 3 series (2003) and my Range rover (2007) have human brain and have no such problem. Their steerings return back to normal. So why only yaris? Mr Raven: I have brought the Yaris to dealer boat multiple times (three times in total). They don't acknowledge that it is an issue and their claim is that this they way Yaris is made. They don't put it in writing though. Thank you for every the answers.

Open Question: Where can I buy exotic car replicas?

Lately, I've had a huge interest in exotic car replicas like the Murcielago, Pagani Zonda, Rolls Royce, and Bugatti Veyron, most built on a Toyota MR2. I've seen videos on youtube of exotic car replicas but when I try to find I dealer/hobbyist and research them, I find them to be a bit mysterious/untrustworthy. Is there any professional place I can go (anywhere in America) for replicas? Why not keep $200k if you just want the car for bragging rights, eh? Money isn't an issue. I'm looking to buy 2 or 3 replica exotic cars.

Open Question: After a long hard look at all new cars and models, i decided to buy 2010 toyota camary?

i researched many cars but could not find any better choice than the camry. i am aware of the recent toyota recalls and have heard the argument many times that "buy american, not foreign". I went to chrysler and chevrolet dealers too for test drives. However the chevrolet hhr and chrysler pt cruiser did not seem to impress me the way camry did. The ride in hhr and pt cruiser wasn't as smooth and comforting as camry. the interiors looked old and un-inspiring. the hhr a/c took long to chilly. when i went to toyota dealer, just sitting in the camry made me fall in adore with it. it looked so fine from outside and the inside. it was spacious, and the interior looked very inspiring. it felt very smooth ride and remarkably silent. in the end, i had to ignore the argument, "buy american only". I felt the hhr and pt crusier were badly overpriced and their value is really no more than hyundai accent at most. to pay $20000 for them, was just not justified. it felt as if that was double price. the camry cost $21,000 only.

Voting Question: oil change at 5000 miles or 3000 miles?

I have 2007 Toyota Corolla with 39800 miles on it. Dealer said oil will be changed every 5000 miles. And that is how its always been. But reading on internet, it said oil must be changed 3000 miles. Since the oil has been changed every 5000 miles, does that mean the car will not have long life now? I never check the oil level and never once put any oil in it. Its every done at dealer oil change only every 5000 miles. However, at gas stations i look some people checking the oil reading in their car and pouring motor oil. Why do they that? Am I supposed to do that too? Or I don't need to do anything and dealer will just keep changing every 5000. Explain. I am not an automotive expert and don't understand anything below the hood. I only know how to steer. why are some people checking motor oil level at gas station? i never do that. Please help me what's behind this checking of oil by some people?

Voting Question: Scion Tc, Honda Civic Sedan, or 05 toyota tundra?

Okay, so I'm going to be upgrading and getting a better used car. The Scion Tc, I would receive from the dealer and would be able to receive the 100k mile warranty and the same with the civic. But my dad is about to buy a new car so he's going to be getting rid of his 05 double cab toyota tundra. He's always taken it to the dealer for servicing but has almost 200,000 miles on it. The dealer service middle says that it will last at least another 100k miles and the truck looks like new. Also with the truck I would receive it way below kelly blue book value and I steer around 20 to 30 miles a day. The tundra would be about $6000 to $7000 cheaper than the scion and civic. So I'm at a split decision, car or truck, and if a car which one?

Resolved Question: 2003 BMW 325 xi maintenance help.?

I just bought a 2003 BMW 325 xi (with 132000 miles on it) from a Toyota dealer, and I'm not sure what maintenance has been performed on it. This is my first car, so I'm not really sure how to handle any basic maintenance issues. I know I should probably receive my oil changed, but should I just take it to a jiffy lube type place, or should I take it to a BMW dealership. What other services should I have performed? Tire rotation? Wheel alignment? Brake inspection? Is $230 for every of those services expensive, or is that normal for a BMW?

Open Question: Should I buy a $20,000 (CDN) 2006 Acura RSX ( 20,000 miles) , or a $24,000 (CDN) 2010 Toyota Corolla S (NEW) ?

What would you buy for yourself: A used 2006 RSX (automatic), or a new 2010 Corolla-S (automatic) ? I want something blue, something with automatic transmission, an engine with a timing chain, and front-wheel steer for the winters here in Ontario, Canada. I was going to buy a new Blue Corolla S because I just adore the color, but then I saw a used Acura RSX for sale for only $19,998 and I was wondering; What’s a better choice ? I just need something to be comfortable in on long road trips and commutes to and from work, something with LOW INSURANCE rates, and good fuel economy as well as low maintenance costs. The dealer told me that the Acura RSX is one of the cars with the lowest ownerships costs anywhere and almost no cars have cheaper insurance rates than an RSX ! Is this true? So if you just wanted a nice smooth car, with a plush smooth ride, and low costs, which of THESE 2 would you receive? P.S.: ( Please don’t give me advice to buy some other brand of car, other than an RSX or Corolla, because I’m not asking for that, and if you do then you are a MORON with no brains because you didn‘t read my words asking you to please not tell me any other cars other than the RSX or Corolla, thanks ! ) Sorry, but these are Canadian prices; our prices are about 10% (or more) higher than American prices. I should have mentioned that earlier. For that used Acura, here’s the link to the web site, you can look it here yourself: http://www.autotrader.ca/used_cars_Car_details/HAMILTON_Ontario_2006_ACURA_RSX_2563128.html?srcID=5&frnID=8638110&cofid=ON20090121101431832&prv=Ontario&r=40 I asked the dealer if he would take $500 dollars off the price because if he would I would buy it right then and there. He told me “absolutely not!” and he wasn’t willing to even think of making a deal on it !

Resolved Question: I recently had the steering rack replaced on my 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser, when I left the dealer I noticed my?

SRS light was on (airbag not working) and my horn would work. Not able to take it back until later I did notice when turning the wheel there was a slight noise and I thought a bearing was bad/dry. The report was that the Steering angle sensor was bad. In my slight research, no one has indicated that they just wear out over time. The fact that the steering column work was done, my understanding of what a steering angle sensor is and where it's located ledad me to believe the sensor and cable were damaged during repair. Don't have $650 to repair, especially if I'm not at fault. Suggestions please. To provide clarity on timing of events, I called the store 10 minutes after leaving, was not able to take back immediately. With travel schedule it took 3 weeks to drop off and coordinate. When they call to report the part was being ordered and it'd cost $650 is when my opinion was voiced, research began and leads me to the conclusion of their mistake verses coincidence on the timing of the sensor going out.

Resolved Question: Popping noise when turning on 2000 Toyota Camry?

My sister's 2000 Toyota Camry just hit 200k miles and she is having her FIRST problem with it. When she is turning, there is a popping noise, and when she hits a bump there is the same pop along with a bit of a rattle that sounds like its coming from the front left suspension. The dealer said its a CV joint, but Idk.

Resolved Question: Buying 1st car, should dad come with me to dealership?

I'm almost 24 and only now getting my 1st car. However, i don't look my age, people tell me i look 18ish. So i think since i look underage the dealer will try to swindle me and take me for a teenage idiot (no offense to teens). So maybe, i should take my dad? i mean he's driven 6 cars within the past 10 years. (He leases cars.) He knows how to talk to a dealer so he doesn't receive tricked by their scams to make you lease now and for the worst price. I've driven my mom's and dad's cars so it won't be my first time driving. I'm getting a new benz but since i will tax deduct it and write it off as a business expense, i'll be paying for it out of pocket as much as you would for your Toyota. But the point is, do you think i'd receive ripped off because i look young and should i take my dad with me who has experience with dealers or should i go at it alone and look what i can do?

Resolved Question: Are most car searches this long and unsuccessful?

An elderly man ran into my well maintained and low millage 98 Honda Accord and totaled it. I have been searching for a car to replace it for the past three months with no luck. I would prefer to replace it with either another Honda, Toyota, or Subaru (1998 or newer). I have looked at dozens of cars both from private sellers and dealerships. The majority I find are way overpriced (obviously dealers are going to sell over blue book but even private sellers are asking $1,000-2,000 over blue book). A lot of them also have high millage (about 80,000 more miles than my old Honda). I so far have brought four cars I was considering buying to my mechanic ( I refuse to buy a car without getting it checked first). The first car (2000 Honda Civic) turned out to be horribly rusted underneath. The second car (2001 Honda Accord), needed 2,600 worth of work on it because the previous owner never did any maintenance on it. The third car (2001 Honda Accord) needed 2,500 worth of work on various things. And the fourth car (2002 Honda Accord) needed to have a new transmission which would cost $3,200. So obviously I did not buy any of these cars. I'm willing to put it some money to fix it up but not over $2,000 right away. Are most car searches this long and unsuccessful? I'm started to receive pretty impatient and disappointed and I'm hoping that I won't have to settle and buy a clunker.

Resolved Question: JBL Car Audio systems question?

I was told by a Toyota dealer that Panasonic makes JBL car radio/cd players. I would like to hear from a Toyota employe if this is true. The reason i'm wondering if this is true is because Harman industrys makes Haman Kardon, JBL and infinity sound systems. Is this somthing they make only for Toyota??? Ron

Open Question: Should I change the oil?

I know what my owners manual says but I wanted to receive some of your opinions. As the old saying goes...things look good on paper but in the real world things don't always work that way...so here's my question. I have a 09 Toyota Camry LE V6 with 12,500 miles. As I work from home, I have used it mostly for trips around town and have taken 3, 500 round trip miles in it since May 31st when I had the oil changed last. The odo had 9600 then. The Toyota dealer emailed me today reminding me to arrive in for service. The manual states 5 mos or 5000 miles I believe, whichever comes first for an oil change. Now, since I am no where close that yet, from what I have explained the way the car is/has been driven, would it be beneficial to the engine to have it changed now or just wait until the 5 mos/or 5k interval rolls around? I am just before going on another 500 mile or so round trip. Plus I am handicapped so I can't do the service on it myself or I would. The dealer uses Quaker State 5w-30 bulk oil. The interstate I steer on these road trips allows for speed limits of 70-80 mph 2 out of the 4 hours trip time. So the rpms stay up around 2300 or so. I don't really wont dirty oil circulating in my engine, but since its only been 3 mos and 3 k between oil changes...is it REALLY dirty? The oil on the stick looks dark not black but the dealer says its supposed to look that way because of todays newer oils??? Thats the situation guys and gals...Im ready for your opinions.

Resolved Question: Buying a New 2010 Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla S Full Option with no navigation?

Hi everyone i have a few questions that hopefully some of you might be able to answer me because online researches gave me too much info. 1. Where to buy: I can pick between San Diego or Bay Area (San Jose, Cupertino, to Haywood) Would be awesome if anyone knows some nice dealers with good prices 2. Which car do you guys prefer? (listing pros n cons) So far after seeing the two cars, I like the Corolla S exterior and the Civic Interior. But the interior of the Corolla S is just... cheap... 3. When should i buy it? Labor's day week? after or before that? I need the car within about 2-3 weeks from now 4. How much should i be expecting? I checked out the one in San Diego. They are listed as high as 20K for LX models (cause i can live without sunroof) However, I got an avg price of 16327 on carsecret. Would they go that much lower on LX model? Toyota here in San Diego is not offering 0%APR anymore for corolla. So now Honda and Toyota are on even match? 5. Any additional Info would be great! Thank you in advance

Resolved Question: Have you negotiated this in a car deal or can you?

I have been looking at a lot of dealer adds and specials. Looking for leases in particular and can put down a payment but DONT WANT TO. Now, for instance, Kia is offering their Forte Koup for 179 a month with 2k down excluding taxes and fees.... Now how likely is it for me to ask to have the 2k down payment and taxes rolled up in the financing to go onto the monthly payment? I would assume this would bring hte monthly payment up considerably to say 250 or 260. I asked this to a toyota dealership in my area for a camry which is almost an identical deal. I asked what the monthly payment would be if they were to roll up the DP and taxes and such in the they included it in the financing and THEY NEVER RESPONDED BACK.

Resolved Question: Does mid-grade gas burn faster then regular grade?

So... my engine was making a weird sulphur (fart) odor. So I took it in to the dealer (its a 2010 Toyota Matrix AWD) and they said that it is the gas I was using. I was using 7-11 regular because it was cheap...Well.. I switched to shell mid-grade. I drove to work about 20-30 minutes away and when I got home I had gone threw a whole quarter!! I thought mid-grade was supposed to give you better mileage,
